I am speaking to you today as a private citizen, a global citizen, a father of a 5 year old girl. Anyone here got kids?

I have been studying the climate change response of Greenland ice for the past 25 years. Each year, I travel to Greenland to make measurements in the field. We learn from the ice. When we ask, the ice reveals its secrets. Because of climate heating, the ice has been teaching us about nature.

The one consistent message we keep learning is the ice is more sensitive to warming than we thought before. We scientists keep being surprised how fast the ice reacts when heated. There are many factors that multiply each other. More melt, darker snow, darker snow more melt, more melt, more water lubricating the ice where it flows over rock, more melt more water helps force cracks apart, more melt, more ocean circulation disruption, more melt faster sea level rise. Because of all the multipliers, we face an amplified response of ice to climate heating. For the past 15 years, melting ice keeps grabbing newspaper headlines. Why? Because the story is getting worse.

So, unless you live in a cave, or have your head up your, in the sand, you already know the ice is melting, faster as climate continues warming.

Less well known, Arctic ice melt is destabilizing our weather systems? The emerging picture is that extremes in weather; drought, flood, hot, cold are a signature of Arctic climate change.

What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic.

We need the Paris Agreement to be successful to make the pain of climate change much more bearable.

I have some questions for you.

Is this climate march just a venting of frustration and we go back to business as usual?

Are we gonna make sure the Paris Agreement is enforced?

Are we going to finally shake off the denial and make sustainability a central organizing principle of what we do?

Are we going to give back to nature instead of just taking from nature?

Are we going to be much better protectors of our environment?

Are we gonna protect the future for our kids and for all life on our only planet?

Is this each of our own turning points to go forward and really make the world a better place?

Are we here for peace?

The war on our environment must stop! Let’s make peace with nature.
