Noam Chomsky on the Purpose of Public Education

In a time of existential risk when irresponsible decisions are being made by the incoming administration, many professors of education, teachers in public schools, and parents who are resisting the privatization of public education oppose the nomination of Betsy Devos as Secretary of Education.

In this video Noam Chomsky, a life-long advocate for progressive public education, encourages us to consider what the purpose of a public educational system is. Is it to pass tests, to absorb materials given to children from the outside that they must repeat, or to think creatively in classrooms that value student initiated learning projects that have some purpose in the world?

Garn education books value imagination, creativity, originality, and innovation. The critical question that many of our books address is “What actionable knowledge do we need to change the future now?” We are convinced that all those who work for the common good in the caring professions must be supported. Garn’s task is to support a new generation of thinkers who are using the power of science and social experience to stand up for human rights and to participate in the struggle for a future in which Earth is a child safe zone.
