About the Book

Toodle-oo Ruby Blue! is a touching story about two little girls – Ruby Blue and Lilly Wu – saying goodbye to each other. Part poem, part song – the words rhyme as Ruby Blue and Lilly Wu remember playing together. In the vibrant illustrations the tiger is a small soft toy that grows to be a larger than life real tiger, which almost leaps from the page in Rachel Backshall’s brilliant illustrations. Destined to be a beloved classic, Toodle-oo is highly predictable and easy to read. Both children and adults already love it. Nominated “Most Distinguished American Picture Book for Children” – 2018 Randolph Caldecott Medal. Nominated “Most Distinguished Contribution to American Literature for Children” – 2018 John Newbery Medal

Featured Review (Amazon)

What I do professionally is teach school. I’ve taught across the grades but am now snuggled in TK, a program for 4 year olds that turn 5 and now have a two year run at K. In that capacity I read books to and with children everyday. I’ve read thousands over 30 plus years. This is a book worthy of buying, noting and adding to book boxes and school collections. The story is charming because it is woven around an experience all young children share-saying goodbye to a friend they enjoy being with. Most of us know that doesn’t always go well. So, that said I know very few stories or social stories that address goodbyes. And yet that is so fundamental a life experience. I struggle with it every single year as I must send off my class.

When would I use this? Well in my room I try to use one day of the week for stories that have a teaching aspect about social situations children face both in the classroom and at home. I would use this perhaps at the end of the year. This story is a quick read and is a darling rhyming pattern text about goodbyes between two playmates. The pictures remind me of A House is a House For Me because they encourage staying and looking at all the imagery-it is fanciful. This makes me feel as a Big Book it would be terrific for a whole class experience-to see the richness and develop vocabulary development whole group. There is good reason Denny Taylor would have such stuff-her work in children’s literacy is remarkable. I will use this book and develop discussions with my classes about how they feel saying goodbye.

Last year my class lost four students to moving (and reunification with family), and on the last day children were sharing how that felt-this book would be so helpful. Not goodbye but a joyful way to hold onto our memories of a good time with another we like so much. And full of animals. A darling charmer of a story perfect for younger children that encourages discussion and bonding.

About the Illustrator Rachel Backshall

Rachel Backshall, BA Oxon, is a UK artist and illustrator recently graduated from Oxford University. She has exhibited her highly acclaimed silk paintings in London, Oxford and Liverpool – many of which are inspired by her research into specific archaeological sites during her degree.

Her illustrations are inspired by the natural world and focus in particular on the wild and wonderful animals that appear both in reality, and in children’s imaginations. She is particularly interested in the concept of imaginative play, looking at the way children visualise and develop games and stories. Acknowledging that human imagination plays such a vital part to all stages of our lives, Rachel hopes to capture some of these moments within her illustrations, and in particular to relate to the magical way that children bring their toys and games to life.

Rachel has recently illustrated the prize winning Pearl of the Seas and Kris and Kate Build a BoatThe Magical Adventure for Garn Press author Ruth Finnegan, and has since been extremely honoured to work with Denny Taylor on Toodle-oo Ruby Blue as part of the Ruby Blue Series. She is currently working with both authors on future projects.
