VIDEO PLAYLIST: George Lakoff, on Language and Politics

What George Lakoff is about is framing – essentially how we think. He challenges the given – what we believe and take for granted. He encourages us to join him in this endeavor and to question the assumptions that “frame” our lives.

This is not an easy task. We’re bombarded by news stories everyday that we don’t know are real or fake. Much of the “news” is actually unsupported opinion – bombastic blather with the “facts” unchecked. Some of the “news” is deliberately broadcast to the public to obfuscate the truth, to hide it from us, and to make us believe falsehoods about people and the harsh circumstances of everyday life. Some accounts are published with sinister intent and contain nothing but lies. Damaging –damning — lies.

Fortunately Lakoff is ready to help us call out the liars. He is an Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics, University of California at Berkeley and he is both renowned and formidable.

Don’t Think of an Elephant!he advises, making the most of the title of one of his many books. Know Your Values and Frame the Debate!”.

“We don’t have to march in protest, or engage in civil disobedience, or do anything the least bit violent,” he writes on the Huffington Post. “You just have to say the words. There is power in naming.”

The piece on Huff Post is entitled: Disaster Branding: The Importance Of Naming Climate Disasters After Trump. “In the future,” Lakoff writes, “we should name major disasters after the person most responsible for causing them.”

To assist us in this task Garn Press has created a play list of George Lakoff videos on language and politics, and we encourage our readers to listen to the research Lakoff presents and become critically conscious of the ways in which language is used to shape the circumstances of our everyday lives. Wars begin with words and our peaceful existence – our health and wellbeing, our struggle for equity and justice, for human rights – also begin with our ways with words. Be informed. Listen to Lakoff and make sure you are not duped into thinking and believing ideas that are against your own sense of human rights and justice.
